Studio Residency
“In the Fall I have been invited by curator Laurel Ptak to present a mid-career survey of sculptural work at the Ordnance Building on Fishers Island, spanning pieces made between 2016 and the present. As part of the exhibition, Laurel has invited me to develop a walk — a choreographed activation of the space and the work within it. Movement has long been embedded in my sculpture: wheels, handles, and paths of motion are recurring formal elements, and works like Meander trace trajectories through process and space as central concerns.
To develop this activation I am collaborating with dancer and choreographer Juli Brandano. The Program on Sunday, July 12 is an open rehearsal that is provisional and exploratory, without the actual sculptures present. We will be using cutouts and stand-ins in place of sculptures. Juli and I will be trying things out, talking through ideas, and feeling our way toward what this walk might look like.
Working at KAJE feels particularly resonant alongside Ada Friedman’s paintings, which also attend to paths of movement, making this an unexpectedly generative place to begin.” - Alina Tenser
